The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) issued a public warning on May 16, regarding the "re-programmed" approach of scammers in collecting personal information using bogus SIM registration sites.
In a palace briefing, DICT Sec. Ivan John Uy said that scammers provide users access to a fake website where they may register their SIM cards.
"They are asking people if they have already registered their SIM card, and if not, they are telling them to click this link and go to their site, which is fake," said Uy.
Subscribers will receive a text message from a fraud e-wallet provider asking if they already registered their SIM card in compliance with the SIM Registration Act. If users enter their information in the offered fake link, scammers will be able to collect their personal data such as name, address, date of birth, and e-wallet password.
Uy warned the public against falling for such scams.
The required SIM registration date was initially set for April 26 and has been extended for 90 days by President Bongbong Marcos.
The new deadline for SIM card registration will be on July 26 and will not be extended.
