Peasant and youth organizers Cedrick Casaño and Patricia Nicole Cierva were captured alive last May 18 by alleged members of 501st Infantry Brigade in Brgy. Cabiraon, Gonzaga, Cagayan, KARAPATAN-Cagayan Valley reports.
According to the human rights group, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), who declared to end the revolutionary movement in the North-eastern part of Luzon by all means, has not yet disclosed the whereabouts of the two organizers up until present.
Families, friends, and former colleagues of Casaño and Cierva have expressed their concern with the safety of the two under the custody of the military.
Various organizations and individuals called on the 501st Infantry Brigade and its commander Colonel Ferdinand Melchor Dela Cruz to immediately surface Cierva and Casaño.
“The 501st Infantry Brigade must recognize that Cierva and Casaño have rights under the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) and have the right to due process,” said BAYAN NCR.
Cierva is the former Secretary-General of Kalipunan ng mga Sangguniang Mag-aaral (KASAMA) sa UP and served as a university councilor in University of the Philippines Manila from 2017 to 2018. Casaño is an environmental defender who staunch opposition to the open-pit and magnetite mining operations in the coastal of Cagayan Valley.
